			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>To be healthy means living a much longer and fulfilling life; that is how I see it for the most part. You start out being healthy by putting yourself in a specific mindset. You need to reevaluate yourself, what you usually eat, and how active you are. While you do not have to be an Olympic-class athlete to be considered healthy, trying to strive for that ideal definitely does not hurt. Then you have to rethink your diet. Right off the bat you are going to have to throw away the idea of eating fast food and junk food on a daily basis. Also, get rid of soda entirely. Consuming so much sugar is never good for you.</p>
<p>You want the proper diet foods to give your body the health boost it so desperately needs. That said, you cannot just eat as much healthy foods as you want at any time of the day and expect it to help you with your goals; it does not work that way. You have to practice portion controls with the right foods. By doing this, not only will you eat the right foods but you will be able to control those late night cravings which can hold back any attempt at dieting or healthy eating.</p>
<p>Also, I know I used the word &#8220;dieting&#8221; in the last sentence but please do not call it being on a &#8220;diet&#8221;. Call it anything but, or better yet, call it a &#8220;lifestyle change&#8221;. As far as I am concerned, the word &#8220;diet&#8221; as a negative connotation to it. When people usually say they are on a diet it is usually with a sigh in your voice and regret in their heart. It feels like a giant, long-term chore to them and that is not the way healthy living should be approached. Calling it other than a diet will give you a different mindset. A very good friend of mine told me that this simple change of name has a sort of positive placebo effect that might just be enough to help you stick with it. And you know what, he was right. Since the day I had that discussion with my friend I have never called my choice to be healthy a diet. I have chosen to live a healthier lifestyle than I have done in the past. And truth be told, I do not think I was ever healthier than I am now and I am still sticking with it!</p>
<p>Healthy living is hard work but it is well worth the effort. Eating better is an important aspect on how to be healthy.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I was in elementary school recess was a time to run around, burn off the energy from snack time, and play with my friends. Little did I know that the playground equipment I loved then would lead me to a life of exercise.</p>
<p>It is incredibly important to teach children the exhilarating feeling of being active when they are young. With all of the distractions like television, computers, and even cell phones clouding the minds of young kids it&#8217;s almost impossible to get them outdoors to play and be active. Required active outdoor play is a great way to get children outdoors and on the monkey bars.</p>
<p>Think about playground equipment as training for other gym equipment when they&#8217;re older. Swing sets are the precursors to rowing machines&#8211; the way that you need to pump your legs and stretch your back. Monkey bars are basically chin up bars as they are but they have the added benefit of stretching your back and other parts of your arm like your triceps and shoulders. Simply running around with youthful abandon is something all children need to do and can prepare them for marathons or treadmill exercise equipment later in life.</p>
<p>Why put such an emphasis on active play as kids? The recent numbers released about childhood obesity are startling. We can teach children about eating right and get them to eat proper lunches in school, but that doesn&#8217;t necessarily teach them to be good to their bodies outside of the school environment.</p>
<p>Even Michelle Obama, our First Lady, has jumped to action to battle childhood obesity. Campaigns running on Sesame Street, Disney Channel, and Nickelodeon urge children to get up and exercise! Well, the only child-sized exercise equipment is playground equipment! Find a park near you that has a swing set, and other great equipment and take your child there a few times a week. They will see it as playing but you will see it as teaching them good habits for when they get older.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t think you need all that playground equipment to get your kids to exercise. <p>Tight calves are something that is a common problem for many runners. You&#8217;ll be running along and then your calf muscles tighten up and cause some pain while you are running. The pain may subside a little bit as you continue to run &#8211; but may come back when you are finished with your run. The good news is that tight calf-muscles can be prevented.</p>
<p>Some of the most common causes of tight calves are possibly having a biomechanical issue with your running gait, increasing your mileage by too much too soon or by running in snow or on ice.</p>
<p>To see if you have a biomechanical problem with your running, go to a qualified running store. Many running stores have a treadmill in them where they will watch you while you run. If they don&#8217;t, they will watch you run to see if you have a problem with your form. If this is the problem, they can make sure you are wearing the correct type of shoes. Or, you may need to wear a special insert/orthotic in your shoes.</p>
<p>As far as training mileage, make sure that when you are increasing your mileage for a longer race or after a layoff correctly. Only increase your mileage by 10% from one week to the next. For instance, if you are running 20 miles a week, only increase your mileage next week by 2 miles.</p>
<p>When the roads are slick from snow or ice, runners have a tendency to shorten their stride and will cause you to run different than you normally do. This change in your gait can cause tight calf muscles.</p>
<p>To help relieve tight calves, stretch out your calves after your run. One of the best is one that I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve seen done. Place your hands on a tree or wall &#8211; arms should be extended. Lean with one leg bent and the other one extended back with your knee straight. Keep the heel of the rear foot flat and feel the stretch on your calf. You should feel the stretching of your calf. Hold this for about 30 seconds and then do it with your other leg.</p>
<p>The stretching regimen in addition to wearing proper running shoes and increasing mileage correctly should get those calves loose in a short period of time. If you find that your calves are still tight, you should see your doctor to see if it something more serious.</p>
